When the System Can’t Get to You, We Do
Presentation Recap from Lago Vista Economic Development Meeting
Jessie Hazelwood, Founder of Bluebird Local Nursing, worked in insurance-based home health for over 15 years. And during that time she’s seen services slashed, patients denied visits, and entire areas like Lago Vista ignored. Not because the people out here don’t need care. But because it's just not “convenient” for the system to get to them.
That’s one of the reasons she started Bluebird Local Nursing. We’re not here to jump through red tape or argue with insurance. We’re here to make sure people can get the help they need, where they are.
How Bluebird Works
We provide private nursing services. Everything from wound care and medication management to full overnight hospice support. Our model is simple:
$130/hour flat rate
No sign-up fees
No contracts
Use us once, or call us every week. Totally up to you.
And if you’re not sure what you need? Advice is free. We’ll point you in the right direction, even if that direction isn’t us.
Why This Matters for Lago Vista
Let’s be honest: Lago isn’t the easiest place to get to. The drive alone makes most traditional agencies back out before they even start. Jessie has worked for companies that have declined patients in that area due to drive time.
But Bluebird pays nurses well, gives them control over their schedules, and makes it easy to take on clients right in their own neighborhoods. It’s not uncommon for Jessie to say to a new nurse, “Hey, can you just run down the street and check on Mr. Johnson?”
Hiring locally also builds consistency. Patients get to know their nurse. Nurses stay invested. Care improves. Everyone wins.
A Broken System That Nurses Are Leaving
You’ve heard people talk about a nursing shortage. What we actually have is a shortage of nurses willing to work under impossible conditions.
Twelve-hour shifts. Poor pay. Patients who need more than the system allows. Jessie’s seen nurses handed a Band-Aid and told to figure it out. She’s seen them leave, not because they don’t care, but because they care too much to keep providing subpar care under a broken model.
At Bluebird, we flip that. Nurses get high pay, flexibility, and support. Patients get quality, human-centered care. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t check boxes. We just show up and take care of people.
Want to Stay at Home? Here’s What That Really Takes
If you or a loved one wants to age in place, you’ve got options:
Insurance-based home health – Usually provided with Medicare but limited in scope and availability.
State-paid caregiving (DADS services) – Available if you qualify for Medicaid.
Private caregivers – Can range $15–$30/hour, but come with limitations (can’t admister meds, manage tubes, etc.).
Direct-hire with oversight – You hire someone you trust, and a Bluebird nurse drops in once a week to manage the care plan.
We even help clients manage 24/7 care teams through group messaging. Our nurse might not need to be there every day, but we stay looped in to keep care coordinated and safe.
A Note to Nurses: We’re Hiring. On Your Terms
We’re PRN-based, which means our nurses pick up what they want, when they want. High autonomy. Want to create your own LLC and work full-time under our umbrella? Great. Want to pick up one case near your house and keep the rest of your week free? Also great.
We have nurses waiting to join us. And if you’re in the Lago area, even better. This community deserves care from people who live here and get it. Sound like something you want to get involved with? Send us a message.

And if you’re a nurse, a neighbor, or someone who wants to stay home but isn’t sure where to start, reach out. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
